Points won by each set: | 26:23… |
Unreturned serves:
12 % Rios – 3 of 25
20 % Zabaleta – 5 of 24
Two weeks after their epic Hamburg final, they met again in the final of a German speaking city, that time in Austria. In the first eight games nothing indicated Zabaleta [26] had a serious injury. Afterwards he required a tape to his left knee. He lost the first two points on serve in the 9th game and decided it didn’t make sense to risk the aggravation of his injury because two days later he would play his first round match at Roland Garros (lost it 1-6, 6-7, 2-6 to Mirnyi). Rios [9] entered the French Open ’99 with two clay court titles intertwined with an unexpected loss to Prinosil in Rome, just like a year before he was the main favorite to the title, and lost in the quarterfinals again.
Rios’ route to his 14th title:
1 Davide Sanguinetti 7-6(4), 5-7, 6-3
2 Alberto Berasategui 7-6(4), 6-2
Q Stefan Koubek 6-4, 6-0
S Younes el Aynaoui 6-1, 6-3
W Mariano Zabaleta 4-4 ret. [ knee ]
