18-year-old, the future two-time French Open champion, Bruguera [81] became a sensation of the first half of the year 1989. Within the first six months of the year, participating only in clay-court tournaments (Challengers and main-level) he moved from no. 349 to 37! His big potential was especially noticed in the three biggest European clay-court tournaments: Hamburg (3R, after defeating the then current Monte Carlo champion Mancini), Rome (semifinal) and Roland Garros (4R). Among all matches Bruguera won on clay in 1989, the most impressive was his 65-minute beat-down of the legendary 19 years older Connors [11] at Campo Centrale. Admittedly the conditions were heavy due to rain which limited Connors’ offensive game-style, yet the teenager showcased not only super stable top-spin ground-strokes, he was also hitting overheads with a lot of conviction, and his slices were very natural. Connors looked better in the 2nd set, but lost two games leading (40/15) and one (40/0).
