25 y.o. Sanguinetti [65] was arguably the most unexpected Wimbledon quarter-finalist of the 90s. He had been associated with clay-courts prior to 1998, he hadn’t played a main-level match on grass when arrived at Wimbledon ’98. He was lucky with his draw not facing any typical grass-court player in the first four rounds, but when he finally stood against a grass-court specialist, he was brutally verified. [14] Krajicek’s advantage was quite overwhelming on court no. 13, he already led 5:1* (30/0) in the 3rd set when a momentary lapse of concentration helped the Italian to improve. At *5:4 (15/30) Krajicek risked his second serve though, and finished the contest with his first match point. That Wimbledon ’98 it was a turning point in Sanguinetti’s career; he was a flat striker with a good volley technique, and after that sensational run he realised his game-style suited more to faster surfaces. It caused that for the rest of his career his worst results would come from clay.
