Something what was potentially a totally unexpected all-Italian affair turned into a no contest. Am I surprised? Absolutely not. Arnaldi [104] has done something almost impossible, he not only defeated five players not being a clear favorite in any of those matches, he did it after 19 hours 42 minutes overcoming for more than an hour the previous record of Albert Costa who had spent 18 hours 32 minutes to advance to the Roland Garros semifinal in 2003. Especially Arnaldi’s fourth round victory over Tiafoe was extraordinary, 7-6, 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 after 5 hours 26 minutes trailing 1:4* (15/40) in the 4th set. A round before, Arnaldi ousted Collignon after nearly 5-hour contest. In these circumstances, Arnaldi should have lost the quarterfinal quickly, but he faced Berrettini who had similarly tough path to the quarterfinal, struggling in the past few years with injuries. In a match of two not fully fit players, simply the younger Italian was fitter, and the older one retired after two hours of play. Cobolli [14] found himself in the semifinals with ease, not being seriously threatened to trail 0-2 or 1-2 in any of his two four-setters. I expected an easy 3-0 victory for him, but Arnaldi withdrew, explaining that some virus caught him at night. It’s the third time in the Open Era a player withdraws from the major semifinal following Australian Open ’92 and Wimbledon ’22.

☆ They met last year in the second round of Roland Garros… Cobolli won 6-3, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-1 wasting a match point in the tie-break
