Points won by each set: | 34-23, 33-22 |
Unreturned serves:
40 % Kiefer – 20 of 50
32 % Kulti – 20 of 62
Pretty remarkable that Kiefer [21] wasn’t forced to play at 5-all on fast grass, and dropped just one service game throughout the week (trailed 0:2* in the 2nd set of the final) given that he didn’t face any player he would have been a huge favorite against. In the final his service disposal was terrific, when the former champion Kulti [303, lucky loser] managed to make a return, the German was attacking the net with approach-shots and finishing the points with volleys… Kulti was super lucky he entered the main-draw at all – he’d lost his third match at the qualifying rounds to Richey Reneberg (4-6, 5-7), being ranked the lowest among four players defeated at that stage, but three of them left Germany, and Kulti who stayed to compete in doubles (6-3, 6-7, 6-3 over Kiefer/Siemerink in 1R partnering E.Ferreira) took advantage of Agassi’s sudden withdrawal a few hours before stepping on the court.
Kiefer’s route to his 3rd title:
1 Rainer Schuettler 6-4, 6-1
2 Richey Reneberg 6-1, 6-4
Q Jan Siemerink 6-4, 6-2
S Daniel Vacek 6-4, 6-3
W Nicklas Kulti 6-3, 6-2
