   A night session meeting of two 29-year-old players. Martin [7] was applying the serve-and-volley strategy behind each first serve, Dosedel [95] was doing that at the ~33% mode. The American began the match hitting 4 aces in the first five points, his level was unreal until he led 4:1* (40/15)… he led 14:0 in winners then (!), yet Dosedel won the sixth game hitting 4 winners in a row. From that moment onwards, the match was very balanced. In the 2nd set the Czech fought off break points in two games, and converted his only break point leading 6:5. In the following two sets, Martin trailed *3:4 before grabbing three games in succession. The 4th set was tougher for him because there was 2:3 (0/30) and 3:4 (15/30) – in both situations Martin delivered his best serving.

   ☆ Ctislav “Slava” Doseděl was a clay-courter in the 90s, his breakthrough occurred at the French Open ’93 when ranked no. 114, he reached the fourth round. Afterwards, almost to the end of his career in 2001, he kept his position inside the Top 100, collecting 3 ATP titles in six finals (all on clay), and reaching the semifinal on clay in Rome (his best ‘Mercedes Super 9’ result). Nonetheless he was an unusual clay-court specialist because his strokes were flat, he was reluctant to play a few meters behind the baseline, and he loved attacking the net, therefore his US Open ’99 quarterfinal may be considered unexpected, but very logical given his skills in general. It was a well fought achievement because in the first round he’d ousted the former no. 1, Jim Courier 6-4, 6-4, 7-6… quite interestingly Doseděl won their H2H rivalry 4-1, and in the only match he lost to Courier, he was relatively close to win in four sets.
