   Very quick four-setter which lasted only 1 hour 55 minutes (no deuce-game until the last game of the 3rd set). The two-handed backhand – Martin’s very good shot, deserted him in that rather boring contest. The tall American [9] had saved three mini-match points at 3:4 in the 4th set and had an easy put away FH volley (to get 4-all) – netted it and lost his serve two points later. Agassi [9] couldn’t be considered a clear favorite because he was ranked lower at the time with a negative Head-to-Head record (2:3)… Martin enjoyed a tremendous year at Slams ’94 (final – third round – two semifinals, respectively), gathering fewer points in the most important events only than Sampras; those results were actually at the level of the greatest players in the world as far a season is concerned, but it wasn’t enough to play ‘Masters’ that year which seemed quite improbable after the US Open. He played poorly in the last quarter of the season, being early eliminated twice by Agassi; he lost three times to Magnus Larsson in 1994 as well. After the US Open, Martin was ranked 6 while Berasategui No. 10 – the Spaniard won 4 ATP titles (all on clay) after New York (!) and unexpectedly finished the regular season as No. 8 also surpassing Stich which seemed more improbable after the US Open ’94.
