   An interesting match between two young players who were both in the stage of rising in the ranking: 22 y.o. Mecir [15] and three years younger Becker [3], who was already a double Wimbledon champion. The West German committed six double faults in his first three service games, but he was broken only once in those games. Mecir had to save break points at the beginning of each set he won, in the mid-set he survived the first two service games with the help of seven deuces (3 and 4 respectively). It’s really astonishing how many games he won facing break points (16) at the UO ’86 despite the lack of a big serve, making three upsets in a row: first against two Swedes, then against Becker.

   US Open ’86 (SF): Mecir d. Becker 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3… 3 hours 18 minutes… Total points: 161-160
   Aus Open ’90 (4R): Becker d. Mecir 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1… 3 hours 49 minutes… Total points: 164-133
