   Pate [42] belonged to the fastest servers in the second half of the 80s. He used his biggest weapon to stun Lendl 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(5) in the third round. Later that year Pate defeated Lendl again in the third set tie-break, that time in the quarterfinal of an exho event in Jericho, 6-3, 6-7(7), 7-6(4)… In the Tokyo final, Edberg [3] got the only break of the final at 1-all (four deuces – the longest game), leading 5:3 he squandered a triple match point. A few months later they face each other again in a final, and Pate wins 6-4, 6-4 (Los Angeles)… Pate won only two singles titles never adnancing to 4R at Slams, but 18 doubles titles (mainly with Scott Davis), including Aussie Open ’91 which helped him to reach No. 1.
