  1. Voo de Mar says:
    Points won by each set: | 44-37, 28-23, 33-19 |
    Unreturned serves:
    24 % Becker – 23 of 94
    18 % Steeb – 17 of 90

The biggest final among eight Steeb [15] played in his career at the main-level (3-5 record), the only one which is an equivalent of the “ATP 500” tier. At the time he had established himself as a solid top 20 player. A month before he stunned Becker 7-6(3), 6-3 in the Sydney quarterfinal, but at indoor conditions (carpet in particular) Becker was the strongest, and he confirmed it in the Belgian capital. Admittedly he wasted a few break points at 4:2 in the 1st set, but in the next two sets he’d build a two-break advantage, ruling in all departments of tennis craftsmanship. He was attacking the net behind each first serve, but when he missed it, he could dictate the pace from the baseline with his more potent forehand – the shot which was punishing Steeb’s second serves as well. Becker [2] wins another big indoor event next Sunday, and again he takes two successive sets 6-2, that time against his most dangerous opponent at the time whom wanted to dethrone.

Becker’s route to his 25th title:
    1 Karel Novacek 7-6(4), 6-2
    2 Guy Forget 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4)
    Q Paolo Cane 6-4, 3-2 ret.
    S Magnus Gustafsson 6-4, 7-6(4)
    W Carl-Uwe Steeb 7-5, 6-2, 6-2
