    Due to rain the match was played indoors which seemed to favor Federer [2], but ultimately it would be meaningless because the South Korean [58] decided to quit while serving at 1-6, 2:5 (30-all). The beginning of the match was rather normal, Federer led 2:0 after two tight games, then Chung easily held. For the next twenty minutes Chung was committing unusual errors, and trailing 1:4 in the 2nd set he took a medical time-out; it was revealed his left foot suffered plenty of blisters. He played another two games, and decided it didn’t make sense to continue with a limited movement. Thanks to that Federer – at the age of ~37 – advanced to the major final not dropping a set! Seven years later another retirement in the Aussie Open semifinal would occur… with only two points more played. Federer met Chung two months after their unfortunate semifinal, and the Swiss confirmed his superiority winning 7-5, 6-1 at Indian Wells.

    ☆ Hye-On Chung (b. 1996), similarly to Joachim Johansson a decade earlier, reached the Slam semifinal, and soon afterwards disappeared. The South Korean wearing eyeglasses, spent two full seasons (2017-18) participating in the main-level events, and for a brief period he found himself inside the Top 20 (quarterfinals at Indian Wells and Miami mainly helped, supporting his Aussie Open semifinal). In 2019 he began to struggle with back and spine issues, dropped outside the Top 100, and didn’t play tennis for two years at all. After several years of gruelling rehabilitation, he’s been regularly playing in Futures and Challengers for the past two years, but he’s nowhere near the form he built almost a decade ago. Despite setbacks, the best Korean thus far, no other went so far in a Slam or a Masters 1K event.
