Points won by each set: | 51-48, 19-31, 38-28, 34-39, 47-38 |
Unreturned serves:
36 % Djokovic – 63 of 175
37 % Auger – 74 of 199
Djokovic [8], the greatest player of all-time, had defeated all the best players of the 20s decade in Slam matches except 13 years younger Auger-Aliassime [4]. Despite seven years on tour together, it was just their second meeting (or third counting Laver Cup). The Serb implemented his typical tactics against an inferior baseline player, he was glued to the baseline, his only volley winner came at 3-all in the decider! In the 1st set he saved three set points in a long & rather ugly tie-break, one of them was very lucky when they exchanged semi-lob strokes that landed on the baseline before Auger made an error. At one set apiece the officials decided to close the roof even though the sunset wasn’t on the horizon (there’s an approach this year that better to do it earlier than at the end of the set). It was a great situation for the Serb who doesn’t play his best tennis when it’s hot anymore (30°), not bad either for Auger who achieves the best results in sterile conditions. Djokovic led 2:0* in the 4th set when the Canadian managed to break back with a backhand passing-shot on the run to open the game (he struck 4 passing-short winners off his much weaker wing). In the decider they both were fully focused on holding after Auger withstood three game points in his opening service game. At 4-all Djokovic felt some threat at 0/30, but won four points in succession quickly. In the deciding tie-break the 39-year-old Goat used all his extraordinary experience, wisely serving and giving his all in longer baseline rallies. He triumphed after more than five hours when the curfew was approaching and there would have been a very controversial, unprecedented decision if they had reached 9-all.
The tie-breaks: (12/10, 4/7); [10/4].
☆ The official match time – 5 hours 15 minutes, the clock wasn’t stopped when the match had been suspended for closing the roof and the three-minute warm-up.
The break between 2nd and 3rd set lasted 14 minutes… it makes sense to count this match as 5:01, 5:02, 5:03 or 5:04h
Following that match, Auger parted ways with his coach Frédéric Fontang. They cooperated for ten years.
