Points won by each set: | 39-31, 42-43, 28-14 |
Unreturned serves:
28 % Boetsch – 29 of 103
18 % Courier – 17 of 94
Boetsch [26] finished his career with a 3-7 record in the ATP finals, among those three titles he collected I think that Toulouse ’95 must have been the most satisfying. In the final he overcame a former No. 1, who was still an elite player [8], despite having no chance in their three previous encounters. The fact he lost all previous 7 sets to Courier could play a role in a tense ending of the opener – Boetsch lost a 40/0 lead at 5:3* then serving to close the set out, he squandered a 40/15 lead, but saved a break point and converted his seventh set point. In the 2nd set he led 3:1 twice: in games and in the tie-break, but at 5-all Courier – never a volley specialist – finished the set with two forehand volley winners. In those circumstances Courier’s three-set victory could be anticipated, yet the American didn’t even win a game in the decider. Trailing *0:3 he changed his socks but it didn’t help. At 0:5 he played the entire game in a “I don’t care” mode and had wasted five game points before Boetsch won the championship point with a forehand passing-shot winner. He raised his arms in the air and suffered cramps in both legs right after 🙂
Boetsch’s route to his 3rd & last title:
1 Andrey Chesnokov 6-3, 6-4
2 Stefano Pescosolido 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-1
Q Filip Dewulf 6-2, 6-4
S Marc Rosset 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 ☆
W Jim Courier 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-0
☆ Bœtsch two points away from losing in the semifinal to Rosset
