    A great opportunity for both these players to reach the biggest final to date, yet both at different stages of their careers – Nakashima [31] has been around since the decade’s beginning, and for the past two seasons he’s established his position of a very solid “second league” player who drifts between No. 30 and 40 while 19-year-old Jodar [15] is a revelation of the season… Initially Jodar was struggling with his first serve, but saved six break points in two different games. At 4-all (0/30) Nakashima missed his first serve, but managed to win four straight points, and took the tie-break 7/3. Jodar began the 2nd set losing his serve at love. Nakashima seemed to be focus on holding, but at 5:3 he squandered two match points and showed first signs of nervousness serving for the biggest win of his career. The last game was the longest (six deuces), they were exchanging break and match points, ultimately the American of Asiatic roots converted his fifth match point with a big serve which Jodar barely reached with the frame of his racquet.

    ☆ Rafael Jódar, who will turn 20 soon, was No. 540 exactly twelve months ago, and now, after the Canadian Open semifinal he’ll reach his career-high No. 11 (!); it’s been one of the most astonishing improvements within a year in the Open Era. The Spaniard claimed his maiden title this year (Marrakech) and backed it up with very good results in the biggest clay-court events (quarterfinals in Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros). My initial estimation: the Top 10 is inevitable in his case due to impressive consistency, whether he’s going to be a Top 5 player I’m not certain yet cause I see some vulnerabilities in his tennis.

    The three biggest stars of men’s tennis (Sinner, Alcaraz, Ðoković) withdrew, Auger-Aliassime joined them after the draw had been made, Zverev was ousted already in the second round, and it opened the draw wide open. For the first time at Masters 1K the quarterfinal line-up was constructed of guys born in the 21st Century, the semifinal line-up has been the youngest since Indian Wells 2007 (Ðoković and Murray were 19, Nadal 20 and Roddick 24), now in Montreal – Jódar (19), Tien (20), Shelton (23) and Nakashima (25).
