Points won by each set: | 22-29, 46-43, 20-31, 41-39, 28-16 |
Unreturned serves:
33 % Boetsch – 51 of 151
39 % Krajicek – 65 of 164
Boetsch [44] made history in sports winning an extraordinary Davis Cup clincher in 1996 being on the verge of losing all sets he won, but something similar (playing a five-setter hanging there thanks to two tie-breaks won) he already experienced on Court no. 2 at Wimbledon four years before, defeating ~21-year-old Krajicek [12], who had been recognised as one of the most powerful servers on tour already in 1991. The Dutchman of Czech roots, was serving like a machine through four sets (faced two break points in two games), yet he lost two tie-breaks: 6/8 and 5/7. In the 2nd set he netted his backhand returns at 5-all (BP) and having a set point at 6:5 in TB. In the second tie-break at *4:5 he slipped, fell down (blood on his elbow), and Boetsch passed him with an inside-out forehand. The machine was jammed in the decider, Krajicek unable to fire an ace, he withstood a triple match point trailing 1:5. Boetsch’s first five-set win in his second attempt.
