The longest quarterfinal in Wimbledon history, a two-day contest of two veterans, the former Australian Open runners-up. It was a time when 31-year-old Clement [145] and one year older Schuettler [94] would have been happy if they had reached the third round of a Slam, and suddenly one of them would book a semifinal spot! The initial phase absolutely didn’t indicate it’d be such a fierce encounter. Schuettler led *5:1 (40/0) having won 15 points on serve, but Clement improved to 3:5 (deuce) and afterwards they would go toe-to-toe. After Clement took the 2nd set the match was suspended at 8.53 p.m. localbime. The following day the match was suspended twice due to rain. In the 3rd set the German fought back from *1:4, 4:5 (0/30) and 5:6 (30-all). The tie-break was unique, he led 6:0, only to see six set points evaporating; Clement committed a double fault, Schuettler fired his 6th ace to capitalize on his seventh set point. In the 4th set the previous set was reversed to some degree. Schuettler led 4:1* (40/15), but lost the set being twice two points away from victory. Clement began the decider better, he was *2:0 in front on serve. Schuettler broke back, at 4:5 (15/30) he won a 12-stroke rally. Later on in that game he saved a match point with a forehand winner and broke to lead 6:5, only to be broken… 6-all (deuce) and the match was suspended! After the resumption Clement lost a point he should have won, and Schuettler had his second opportunity to close the match out on his serve. The Frenchman showed his resistance one more time, but two good first serves gave Schuettler the semifinal. Pretty remarkable that it was Clement’s third more-than a 5-hour match in his career: he lost to Santoro after 6:33h at Roland Garros ’04 and won against Rosset after 5:47h (Davis Cup ’01). Schuettler on the other hand, had played just one match before that surpassed the 4-hour mark (4:02h) as he defeated Voltchkov in Davis Cup ’03.

    Serve & volley: Schuettler 1/4, Clement 3/11
