   Federer [1] should have won that final with the same scoreline as two years before, he was serving at 5:3 (30-all) when he made a casual forehand error. The 1st set was a joke – he led 3:0* after 5 minutes (!), Berdych [15] wasn’t able to win a point in those first three games… Federer, “the king of Halle”, won 29 matches in a row in this event and it was a period when he had to work a lot to keep the streak improving – within six matches he needed deciding sets five times, and what’s quite special, in four matches he was within a few points to win in straights:
   – final ’05: two points away vs Safin
   – 2R ’06: two match points vs Gasquet in the tie-break
   – SF ’06: three points away vs Haas, wasted 10 BPs in the 2nd set including mini-match points at 4-all & 5-all
   – final ’06: two points away vs Berdych
   After that struggle he won 9 consecutive matches not being seriously threatened in any set, and finally being on the verge of another straight sets win, he lost to his long time rival Hewitt in the 2010 final.

   ☆ In the quarterfinal his second all-tie-break 2-1 victory saving MPs in the mid-set (first vs Verkerk three years before: 3/7, 14/12, 8/6), Federer trailed 4:6 in the 2nd set tie-break and saved a mini-match point at 2:4 in the 3rd set – it lasted 2 hours 45 minutes, his longest match in that event
